How accurate is IP geolocation?

IP geolocation estimates where a network address is used. It is useful for regional context, but it is not GPS and should never be treated as a precise physical location.

Where the estimate comes from

Geolocation providers combine several kinds of evidence: address-allocation records, internet routing announcements, provider-supplied corrections, network latency, observed infrastructure, and prior measurements. Different databases update at different times and weigh evidence differently, so two services can assign different cities to the same address.

The ASN and organization describe the network announcing or operating the address range. They do not necessarily identify the retail brand on a customer’s bill. A wholesale carrier, cloud host, or parent company may appear instead.

Country is not the same as city accuracy

Country-level data is often supported by address allocation and routing boundaries. City data is more fragile. A provider may route an entire region through one metropolitan gateway, causing thousands of users to appear near that gateway. Coordinates frequently represent the center of a city or postal area rather than a measured device position.

Why a result can be far away

How ShowMyIP labels location

The immediate location and network information on ShowMyIP comes from Cloudflare for the address Cloudflare observed. It is deliberately labeled approximate. If AWS observes another address, the site does not copy the Cloudflare location onto that address because doing so would imply evidence that does not exist.

The AWS region names describe where the observation endpoint is hosted—not where the visitor is located. “Seen from Frankfurt” means the Frankfurt endpoint received that source address.

How to investigate an incorrect result

  1. Confirm that the exact public address is stable across repeated checks.
  2. Check whether a VPN, proxy, secure browser relay, or corporate gateway is active.
  3. Compare the ASN with the expected ISP or service provider.
  4. Try another reputable database to determine whether the disagreement is provider-specific.
  5. If necessary, ask the address owner or ISP to submit correction data to geolocation providers.

Safety rule: never use an IP city or coordinate as sole evidence about a person. Shared gateways and database errors make that conclusion unreliable.

Timezone mismatches

A browser timezone comes from the device configuration. An IP timezone is inferred from the address location. A mismatch can be caused by travel, a VPN, an incorrect device setting, or an inaccurate IP database. It is a troubleshooting clue, not proof of deception.
