What is a public IP address?

A public IP address is the internet-routable source or destination address that another online service can observe. It usually identifies the edge of a network—not a specific person or device.

Public IP versus private IP

Your laptop or phone normally receives a private address from a home router, office network, or mobile hotspot. Common IPv4 private ranges begin with 10., 172.16 through 172.31, or 192.168.. These addresses can be reused by millions of separate networks because internet routers do not carry them as public destinations.

When your device connects to a website, a gateway translates or routes the traffic. The website receives a public source address. On a home connection that may be the router’s current ISP address. On a mobile network it may be a shared carrier gateway. With a VPN it is usually an exit server owned or rented by the VPN provider.

Why can a public IP change?

Residential and mobile services commonly use dynamic addressing. An address can change after a modem reconnects, a provider lease expires, a mobile device changes networks, or traffic moves to another shared gateway. A VPN can change the visible address whenever you select a different exit or when the provider balances traffic between servers.

A less obvious change is destination-dependent routing. A provider may send traffic toward Europe through one egress and traffic toward Asia through another. That is why ShowMyIP compares independent destinations rather than relying on one server.

What an IP address reveals

Public registration and routing records can usually identify an autonomous system number and an organization responsible for announcing the network. Geolocation databases may estimate a country, region, city, or timezone. Country-level estimates are generally more dependable than exact coordinates. The location can describe a provider gateway or registration office instead of the user.

An address does not directly reveal a person’s name, exact home address, browsing history, or device files. Providers may be able to associate an address with an account at a particular time, but that requires their records and an appropriate legal or operational basis.

How to check your result

  1. Record the Cloudflare-observed address on the ShowMyIP checker.
  2. Run the multi-region test and note whether AWS reports the same address.
  3. Compare the result with the internet or WAN address displayed by your router.
  4. If the router and website addresses differ, read the CGNAT guide.
  5. If a VPN is active, disconnect it only if safe and authorized, then establish a baseline before reconnecting.

Important: one matching result means the sampled services saw the same address during that test. It does not guarantee that the address is static or that every destination will always see it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Wi-Fi address the same as my public IP?

Usually not. The Wi-Fi interface normally has a private address. Your router or provider gateway supplies the public address seen by internet services.

Can two people have the same public IP?

Yes. Home devices share one router address, and CGNAT can make customers from many separate households share one carrier address.

Does restarting a router change the address?

Sometimes. It depends on the provider’s lease and assignment system. A reconnect may return the same address.
